Arrive in medieval Chateldon and take the road to Puy Guillame, a pretty market town on the Allier. 500 metres up the road, looking down on Chateldon and its castle, you will find Les Charmes set in a wooded garden that once used to be a vineyard.

There is room to park your car at the front of the house but your separate entrance is at the back up some steps. At the top of the steps you turn right towards the terrace with its table and barbecue and left through French windows into the spacious living room. On your left is a well-equipped kitchen area with dishwasher, washing machine and a table that seats 8. The living room has a wood burning stove, a TV, a DVD player, a CD player and radio, sofas and arm chairs. There are 3 bedrooms (2 double and 1 twin bedded) sleeping 6 people. We can provide a cot and a folding bed.

Location

The village of Chateldon lies in the foothills of of the Montagne Bourbonnaise and the northern edge of the Livradois-Forez Park, the largest nature park in Europe. The region has exceptional natural landscapes and is rich in flora and fauna.

To the west lies the Limagne, where the Allier and Dore rivers converge, which is a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. There are lots of lovely walks in the area, from the gentle to the more demanding. Some can be taken straight from the door. The Montagne Bourbonnaise rises to 1300m and is a favourite for walkers, cyclists and horseriders. Two Grande Randonnee trails, the GR3 and the GR3A, pass nearby.

The Rivers Sioule and Allier (very local) offer canoing. There is a range of lakes in the area to swim in. The Puy de Dôme and the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park is an hour's drive away where there is spectacular walking and climbing, as well as skiing and snow-boarding in winter. You can also visit Vulcania, the volcano exhibition centre and museum.

Vichy, an elegant spa town with a plan d'eau is 15 minutes drive away. Concerts, plays and operas are regularly performed in the beautiful opera house in Vichy. There is a 6 screen cinema and there are some nice restaurants. The town regularly hosts national and international sporting events. The whole area is famous for its Romanesque churches and its medieval castles.

The chateau at nearby Busset has exhibitions and concerts. There are also many beautiful towns with medieval centres to visit such as Moulins, Billom, Thiers, and Clermont-Ferrand.
